MEDICINAL PLANTS FOREST ( ETHNO MEDICINAL FOREST)
Concept: Conservation of local medicinal plants by growing them in EMF collected from different wild localities of the District, without disturbing their nature.

Purpose: To make the local medicinal plants available in a particular place (EMF) for various kinds of needs like drug collection, research works, etc. to the all-human categories at all time. In future the EMF will serve as a germplasm / gene bank exhibiting itself as a living collection of healing herbs, shrubs & trees.

Here, nearly 10000 plants were planted from 200 species and maintained as a natural forest. The natural occurring species will also allowed to grow without any disturbance.


NURSERY AREA:
Here the medicinal plants propagation is taken up. (Only depends on water availability and monsoon.) The plant are propagated through various methods and maintained in nursery through various nursery techniques and supplied for Village herbal gardens, to public, temples, waste lands etc. The propagated plants are mostly utilized for the own planting and for the village gardens. (Detailed list enclosed with nursery techniques)

CULTIVATION AREA:

As the project requires raw material for drugs production, nearly 5 acres left for undertaking medicinal plants cultivation regularly depending upon the season. The following medicinal plants are regularly cultivated depending upon rainfall.

1.        Centella asiatica - Vallarai
2.        Withania somnifera - Aswaganda
3.        Ocimum tenuiflorum - Thulaci
4.        Hibiscus rosa sinensis - Sembaruthi
5.        Cassia auriculata - Avarampoo
6.        Adathoda vasica - Adathoda
7.        Aloe vera - Sothu katthalai
8.        Andrographis paniculata - Sirianangai
9.        Azadirachta indica - Neem (tree cultivation)
10.        Lawsonia inermis - Maruthani

Crop rotation techniques were adopted as and when required. The cultivation is only organic and no manure or chemicals are recommended.
